Writing Web Content - SEO, Keywords, Title tags, Blog Posts...

People don't read web content the same as print - the rules are different. But as with print, readers will move on if you don't offer them value for their effort. Well written website content will keep visitors on your page - where you want them. Web content should be written in consideration of site visitors first, and search engines second. The thing is, good quality web content and good SEO (more about that below) go hand-in-hand.

SEO - What is it and why should I care?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) combines several techniques, but predominantly it is the way your site's content is written and organized so the search engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo) can find you. With a carefully crafted page, your visitors should find good quality content while allowing the web crawlers to easily find you and index your pages. There are a lot of myths out there about how that's done, but read Google's explanation and you'll see it really does come down to offering quality content. It's an art to mix good writing with keyword phrases and not sound funny or forced, but one well worth paying for. Your site's ranking depends upon it. And that's why you should care!

Keywords and Keyword Phrases

Search engines crawl the Web indexing pages by the billions. When a potential customer types in their search, the engine begins to sort through all that information and returns it to the searcher in order of relevance. The more keyword phrases - not just keywords - you have embedded in good quality content on your site, the more likely your site will show up high in their search results. The higher you rank in that search, the more likely it becomes that potential customer will click on your site. There is a balance though, and some search engines will actually bump your site's ranking down if you use too many keywords - we call that "spammy" and it's not good.

Articles and Blog Posts

Well written articles and blog posts are key to attracting and keeping customers on your website. Every website should offer some information that is valuable to a customer. We can't stress it enough - writing for the web is different than for print. Pay attention to the rules of Web content and you will have site visitors returning, which is what you want - right? We offer editing for your Web content and blogs - you write 'em and we polish them up for your site. Of course we're glad to write original content too!

Writing for the Web has its own set of rules - don't let potential customers click past your site because your content breaks them.

How does my site rank?

Ranking well with the major search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing) takes time and work. Getting there doesn't happen overnight, it takes a while for the search engines to find and index your great content. But, if your site's been live for a while and you're still on the eighth page of search results, it's time to find out why. It's a process, but we can help!

Definition of SEO

"Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results.

In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine's users.

SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search,[1] news search and industry-specific vertical search engines." - Wikipedia
